Subject: So I had a DNA test done

An autosomal DNA test that looks at a great number of markers. For a quick look at autosomal DNA and maps of those "admixtures" which are present in Europe see:

http://www.eupedia.com/europe/autosomal_maps_dodecad.shtml

My results said I was 76% Northwestern European; which is quite high. Some call this group Scandanavian as that it the core of the area in which the admixture occurs. I guess it represents my familial roots, both paternal and maternal in northern Germany and perhaps in other areas (northern Switzerland and eastern Belgium & France) into which Germans migrated at the beginning of the Common Era.

The remaining autosomal DNA is not quite what one would expect. For instance I have no Eastern European DNA represented. So evidently my Polish great-great-grandmother on my father's maternal side did not find its way into the mix. But what did find its way into my genome was representative of the Mediterranean (a Southern European core) admixture at 10% and the West Asian (an Persian/Turkish/Caucasus core) admixture at 14%.

I find it strange that I have a higher percentage of West Asian DNA than of Mediterranean DNA. It leads me to wonder what the vector for each was into the areas represented by known ancestors. I do have two ancestors whose specific European home is unknown; however their names, Buisseret & Sallot, would generally place them in the Hainaut, Belgium - Nord, France borderlands and the eastern portion of France's Franche-Comte, respectively. Looking at the the maps on the Eupedia site there would appear to be two vectors for West Asian admixture into Europe. One via the Danube corridor and the other via Italy. I first considered to the Danube corridor to explain mine since the percentage of West Asian outweighed that of the percentage of the Mediterranean admixture. However, it would seem the absolute percentage would favor the Italian vector.

The close breakdown to a percentage of 75/25 leads me to wonder if the Mediterranean and West Asian admixtures are exactly the result of my distaff side which is that Sallot ancestor. Although she did marry into my Swiss family and that could be the origin of the vector. Still, I am carrying the Sallot's mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and that may be the clue to sourcing her ancestry far off in the mountains of Iran. But that is another DNA test.

And yes, that Western Asian admixture could be representative of Jewish descent.

. . .

I would think that because my maiden surname has roots in an immigration from Germany during the 1600's to England/Scotland, the story being that they were Jews looking to escape religious persecution. Weird but that's the story I have heard a few times.
