Subject: That finale was a mixed bag of good and bad

I liked the way Olivia killed Jessica and the corpse interrogation scene that followed (and the idea that Bell has a thing for redheads!), and the Walter/nurse scene toward the end...all those moments were pure Fringe. And Wlater and Astrid are cute together. And I liked how Bell vanished like a genius from an Arabian tales (disappearing into vibrations thanks to a bell instead of going into a lamp!), or the consistency element of the bullet that Walter pulled out of Olivia's head looking like the one that Etta wore in "Letter of Transit", or the call-back to the beginning with the "it doesn't mean we can't interrogate her" echoing the John Scott storyline form season 1 or Broyles and Nina (although the dialogue was bad), but the rest of the episode made me roll my eyes.

It's really strange that a show that often gives so many good lines to Walter also sucks at writing good dialogues. It's like a fringe mystery. Most of Nina's lines were awful (and her mentioning the ability of "original timeline's Olivia" to crossover sounded like a plothole), and Bell's lacked subtlety. What do they feel like they have to explain everything through clumsy dialogues? The show doesn't seem to know about subtext or doesn't trust its audience enough to understand stuff. It's annoying.

Also the things that were telegraphed and contrived or the level of saccharine at the end turned me off. Even the coda wasn't suprising given the "Letter of Transit" episode that we have seen. They should have either used "Letter of Transit" as season's finale or "forget about it" instead of connecting the dots so obviously (but I understand that a fifth season wasn't sure to happen then).

If Fringe hadn't been renewed this would have been a weak finale for the show. But can they do better next season? I wonder. I foresee that things will go downhill for our heroes next season BUT eventually the show will end with one of those cheesy happy endings so many American series indulge in.

I know it sounds negative but I believe that the best written episodes really are behind, not ahead.

And I miss Over There and Lincoln.

I think even with 4.19 it would have been better if they had shown the two-part end all in one two hour period.

I reshow FRINGE for my cousin, Marie Josephine, and today 4.19 was the next up for her viewing. But I told her it would be better if she saw it last. So I showed her 4.20 today and next weekend I told her that she should see the two part ending all in one. So next weekend, 4.21 & 4.22 and then the next weekend 4.19.

They should have shown it that way. 4.19 would have then been a good season ender much as Restless was. Ok... not as great as Restless, but in the same vein.

To be frank though, I have high hopes for S5. I have a veiw as to what will happen and maybe even the end, but I think it would be a fun and exciting thing to see - if they can throw in some misdirections along the way.
