Ali wanted to watch "Bladerunner" this week but we're watching holiday movies in the run up to Xmas...next week we'll having a family "Movie and popcorn" night to rewatch this SF classic and see if we can poke too many holes in the theory.

There is the mention of a deleted scene about Gaff indicating his professional jealousy towards Deckard. Also there is Harrison Ford's own take on his character as a broken 'human' who recognizes the ultimate humanity in the replicants and is redeemed himself by the love he comes to feel for Rachael.

So I don't see how the movie ultimately works except that Deckard is human. Though he does have all that collection of family artifacts about his apartment. Are they there to support his "supposed humanity" or are they there because he is a human with that genealogical connection to the world?

I just prefer it that he is that most broken of humans - a drunk blade-runner - who alone comes to see the humanity in the replicants.

For years I wanted to believe that Deckard was human, and it made the love story with Rachel more romantic --although in terms of romanticism it's hard to compete with Roy's love for Pris-- if he was human (and it paved the way for Helo/Athena on BSG!)and it made Roy's choice to save him more poignant, but I don't know anymore, especially since I saw the Director's Cut version.

The unicorn thing is indeed very troubling...and apparently Ridley Scott himself said that Deckard is a replicant.

Anyway if he is, I like that it wasn't revealed in a big twist but only subtly hinted at through clues like the dream and its final come-back through the urigami, the collection of photographs (like Leon!)...
