The song is "Last Man in Space." VSC was the made-up band that Walter Bishop followed during his days at Harvard. As the story goes Walter kidnapped his 'other' son, Peter, from the alternate universe in order to cure his genetic illness. And it was Peter who caught a Firefly (yes, taken from Whedon's work) that was intended to be caught by another young girl one night. Because she didn't catch that firefly, her father was out searching the woods for her and was late for work. Because he was late for work the girl's father was rushing through town on wet streets and ran through a stop sign and killed a boy going to hear his fathers band.

In the FRINGE episode Firefly musical icon Roscoe Joyce (played by Christopher Lloyd) was the keyboardist for Walter's favorite band, Violet Sedan Chair. Walter learns why they disbanded (after his son died, see above) and realizes that it was Peter's presence in our universe and ultimately Walter's own actions in bringing him here that led to the death of Roscoe's son.

Love the music, it's great to be able to match up your visuals to it. The storylines sound well interwoven, Joss was a good teacher about that.

The music is interesting. Got that 70's vibe from a band that doesn't exist.
