Re: affects of music on drugs, vice versa
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I feel so enlightened that I took a class
(Music 138 at UCLA - History of Electronic Dance Music!!)
hehehe

Here is what i remember:
well, first E began as a pharmacological drug, for psych patients and such... blahblahblah, the drug, termed "Empathy" was based in Boston, but then was exploited as a street drug as "Ecstacy" in Texas (Texas is currently the number one problem area for E, report the feds).
Scientifically, chemically, whatever, E is a unique drug. It has been officially termed a "psychedelic amphetamine" because it is a hallucinogen like LSD, but also an amphetamine like speed or crystal meth. The uniqueness of E is furthered by the biological effects (ie the whole serotonin release/lack of regulation of serotonin, i forget which) which basically give the person a feeling of warmth, confidence, and empathy (kinda like crystal meth... except the whole thing where you think you are god, that nothing can hurt you, is toned down for E)
After being likened to these hard drugs, E was outlawed from the US. It trickled into Europe where is began its widespread use as a direct companion to music, specifically electronica. Why is this?
The hallucinogenic properties of E are broken down into visual and sonic (or hearing, i like sonic).
Visually, E makes the retinas fire continuously, so one sees a "visual echo." that is why everything seems slow or sluggish, or choppy when you move your head from side to side. also explains why glow toys are popular; in a dark room, the glow is even more brilliant and will excite the visual senses even more. ILR light shows = sensory overload!!
Sonically (this is the cool part), one technically reacts to "sonic echo," meaning the echos or repetitiveness of sound affects the person. Voices can sound distorted or off; music can sound just damn cool. Electronica as a whole is conducive to this sonic echo, with the good ol 4 on the floor beat. Realistically, the overall effect of techno is the utter and complete loss of time; the beats become sonically hypnotizing and put you into a state of lull. thats why when rolling, times seems either really fast or really slow, no normal. Specifically within electronica, it is trance that utilizes E to the fullest. E and trance go together like PB&J, like flys and shit, like Thomas Trouble and Dj D !!! already using the the hypnotizing beat, trance plays on the emphatic effect of E through progression, climax, and then release.
think about it this way: as the beat drops out, you are left hanging, so to speak. the melody kicks in and kinda floats you along. then the snare, bass, or both come in and begin the progression, faster and faster, fully draggin you and kicking up your energy (The speed of the sound trips the echoing, so thats why you respond more, this response is turned into energy, kinda...). Finally the progression is on the verge of climax, you are on your toes, and when the bass finally drops onto a steady beat and the music proceeds after that, you completely release your energy; it is a sudden rush of emotions and empathy. that is definitive of the E-trance connection. Release, empathy, wholeness, feeling of warmth, etc etc etc.
Thats why E got so huge in Europe, because the sound was typically trance when the scene blew up around the early 1990's. yup, exactly 10 years ahead of us. All the hoopla you hear about now, all the shit we ravers get for partying, all the shit promoters get for putting on parties, all the restictions we have, all the pressure of the cops on us all the time; all the bad publicity of raves; this was what it was like in the UK 10 years ago.. exactly like this.
blahblah, after E was given up in the US, it was gladly imported back into the country because the Brits found a good use for it. So yeah we copped the idea, even though we came up with the drug.
so now ive given a whole shpiel on E and its effects on the senses. If i have enlightened or educated anyone, i feel glad. I was bored for about 40 minutes, yeah so what (40 cuz i have to type slow and soft.. shhhh roommates are asleep!) NOTE: this stuff was learned in a classroom, honest, so it is from a refutable source (R. Fink, Prof. and Ethnomusicology, Chairman of Dept.) hehehe cool huh? yeah we listened to lots of music every week, the stuff that elec. music was based on. didnt get super interesting till second half where it focuse on the 90's. anyways back to topic.
Marijuana, weed, pot, bud, ganja, herb, twampa; i think has similar effects on the senses. but it all depends on the bud right? tech and nrg sure hypnotize me when im high though.
Shrooms; i havent tried music on shrooms. I do know that the visual senses are affected by shrooms, as well as motor skills, muscles that kinda stuff (thats why people Hippie Flip! naughtynaughty...) dunno.. i felt spiritual on the stuff, quite interesting. Interested in hearing an account of just shrooms or a combination taken at a rave.
Acid; good lord! well all i know is that SERIOUS visual effects occur. i've heard/read that this is because acid blocks serotonin from entering the brain, which is the thing that prevents dreams from occuring. So what happens is, one pretty much has awake dreams, aka hallucinations. and supposedly one can see the layers of sound, ie the layers of the music he/she hears, or the color or sound, crazy shit like that. maddddddd
umm.. that covers the main substances.. stuff like K or GHB.. i think thats pretty crazy stuff. but i hear that one or the other, or both, depresses all senses whatsoever and make you seem outside of your physical body. weeeeird.. yet interesting... very interesting. and lets say.. salvia? not saliva, but salvia. Indian herb, purely hallucinogenic, lasts 15 minutes, with no side effects. i doubt music affects it. sides, with only 15 minutes of pure trippiness, id want a silent room to feel its full effect. hehe less you try it a different way.. im not going to tell!!

NOTE try drugs in a silent room and you will inevitably trip out.

i had fun writing this long piece of shit out. hope people take the time to read it. either you'll be entertained, educated, or annoyed. cheers
