I heard her voice falling
like stream water
down the evergreen’s throat.

Deep and languorous
it swirled
over branches coated
with copper moonlight.

I thought of a woman
siphoning Persia
through her chant.

Syllables veiled
in fragrant shadow
poured out a long
utterance of prayer,

and breath trembled
through soprano chords
like air
through wind harp or flute.

I couldn’t understand
her language
but could wash my heart
in the night’s longing.

She was its darkness
bleeding into music
I cherished.

Somewhere in the distance
her song glittered
tapped from the spring
of my ancient tears.
