she hears her own voice
climbing a staircase of sound.

Fatigue whispers
at the bottom level
as she looks down,
laundry piled high in her arms,

"I'm so tired"

then a strong yell
“Courtney”

signaling to her daughter
that she's putting
newly-washed clothes
on the bed.

Quietly, she enters
her child's room, tumbling
a sheaf of denim and cotton
unto the quilted spread.

She stares at the clothing
with an artist's eye.

Blue Levis, white socks
they match the summer sky
and morning glories hoisted
like a bridge of vines
across the wind.

The phone rings
and she looks up
wondering if someone else
will take the call..

Her eyes turn
toward the door
and catch a glimpse
of a Tee shirt
laid–out on the rocking chair.

Twin towers stand
like silent giants
guarding one of the worlds
traveled by Gulliver.

She thinks how beautifully
the design has endured
through all those washings
all those wearings

and then cries,
her face imploded with tears.
her mind with a rainstorm of glass.
