GIFT OF GOD HAIBUN

February 26, 1994

White walls and tiled floor,
harvester of pain yet witness of joy,
where life is born to greet the dawn,
surrounded me as anticipation swam
in my belly to meet my lifelong dream,
my chance to see life beyond myself.
All this being new to me,
the doctor coaxed me through.
My husband, by my side, held my hand
tighter with each scream. The hours
passed and at last a tiny life cried out
for Mama and Papa. That beautiful
cry was a blessing that my heart will
never forget. Within those white walls,
on that tiled floor, my love, my life,
no longer belonged to me.

Virgin cry of life
Inner fear cripples my soul
Can love be enough?

The title of this poem was named after
My son, Nathan, which means, “Gift of God.”
