Summer Morning



Storm-gray
with dry leaves rattling in hand,
she leans
against the barn door
waiting to scream.

Breathless, her voice ascends
in a streak of lightning.

The air smells of fire
and she turns
bone-still
under wide skirts of heat.

No rain –
just a few tears
splattered on wood
and the gutter’s tongue of shale.
