TURNING POINT



The white blossoming
you see at the river’s edge
is her parasol --

wide and tilted
against the morning sky.

She knows you are there
and waits
to be acknowledged.

Say her name
and she will turn,
gliding on air,
like the slow fragrance of tea.

For months
you have followed this woman
to galleries,
watching her drift
along a coast of gold frames --

the side of her face
washed over by awe
and the silence of eyes
wishing
the tide would flow toward you.

For weeks,
you have vowed
to disclose your affections,

and in the last few days
you have made a pilgrimage
to her garden.

She stands behind
lace clover,

her gaze
skimming the water’s light
as she waits
to hear your voice,

to feel the wind
shift currents.
