Through The Library Window



He takes the slow pulse of evening
with eyes fixed
on the stone gatepost.

An evergreen branch
curves in shadow
like the wide brim of a hat

and he thinks of Lena’s face
concealed from the sun
as she walked in the garden.

Neighbors could only view
a tall woman gliding
between the trees.

They never saw her eyes
black as India ink

or her lips
trembling in moist air
like flowers
of The Bleeding Heart Vine.

She paced the grounds
declined visits from family and friends,

and turned her head
from the light.

One evening
He found her draping
the rocker in a white negligee;

her long, thin fingers
dangling over a wine glass
with the poise.

He wanted to pull on her hand
hard , shaking down
a response,
but knew better.

His wife had lowered the lamp
drifting into the quiet shade
of memories and hemlock.
