Subject: Tiger Lilies (read this one)



At a glance
they lean their heads forward
like women veiled
In orange silk.

Yesterday, the garden
was bangled in ferns and stems

making that corner of summer
solely green.

I never thought
about their arrival,

or how the sudden burst
of flowers
would draw my mind

toward Hindu women
who once served meals

with pearls crowning
an array of fruit and bread.

I have already sipped
the cool shade of June

and now on the verge of July
I am given jewels.

They adorn my taste
with rich fire

and I close my eyes
breathing in
the silence of an old story.
