Subject: The Pump House

The Pump House


We honed the soles of our feet
on stones wading
upstream
and back toward the pump house.

Footsteps throbbed
walking through water

and touching on
the awkwardness
of rocks and our age –
adolescence.

I was tired
and wanted to sit inside
the pinewood shack

letting my toweled
head and body droop

like a thin-stemmed
cala lily.

This was our place
to hang out
and smoke a pack
of Virginia slims.
after a Sunday swim.


Here, I could shake my hair loose
hold the cigarette
at a chic distance

and arch one leg
as if it were an eyebrow
saying “look at me”.

I challenged the light
coming through broken windows

to slant the moment
model its sensation

after an old girlfriend
in one of my father’s photographs..

She was beautiful
reclined on a bathing dock

and kicking the sun
with Rita Hayworth’s
confident flair
