• Prayers for Janette, Continued -- Lemora, 11:03:13 02/09/10 Tue
  I just learned that my friend is going back for more surgery, which will be risky and complicated. The risks are that she will be significantly brain-impaired, but could live longer. The worst is, she may not survive the surgery. If she survives with cognition intact, there's the question of how long can she live and how sick will she be. Any more prayers you can spare will be appreciated.

• Need prayers for my BIL Steve... -- MonicaW, 06:28:38 02/09/10 Tue
  My BIL Steve is in the hospital fighting for his life. Ten days ago he was a healthy, mid50's 4th grade teacher but then he caught a flu. They don't know if it was H1N1 as they didn't test for it when he went to the doctor a few days later. He felt horrible, had a fever on and off and a bad cough for a week. He was admitted to the hospital Sunday with a lung half full of fluid and put on a ventilator. His condition worsened Monday to the point where he is now at UCSF on a lung bypass machine (ECMO)and dialysis with the doctors saying it is 50-50. I am worried sick for him and my sister Lisa and niece Rebecca. I spent yesterday pacing the floors here in VA while I want to be in CA. Please send healing prayers for Steve. Thanks.

• Prayers for Brian Burke and his family on the death of their son/brother Brendan. -- Judie, 13:17:50 02/07/10 Sun

  Millions of people lose loved ones every day. But this particular loss caught my eye because Brian Burke used to be the General Manager of the Vancouver Canucks. I'm not a sports fan, but I think most Vancouver people knew his name. So when I heard on Friday that his 21 year old son Brendan died in a car crash I felt so bad for him and his family. It made me sad and it hit me right HERE because it reminded me of nearly 11 years ago when our son Desi died at 24 in a motor scooter accident.
  
  I just SO know how Brian and ex-wife/mother of Brendan are feeling today and will feel for weeks and months to come. My prayers and condolences go out to them. The death of a child is a club no one wants to be a member of.
  
  I know there are others at LOL who have lost a child - hugs to all of you.

  • I just got the shivers because as I was reading this, our local Lansing, MI newscast was doing a report on the crash from a different perspective. Mark Reedy of Bloomfield Hills, MI, who was a Michigan State University student, was in the car with Brendan and also died in the crash. I can't imagine the pain and heartache of losing a child.   I'm having one of those days, and altho I know it's because I'm tired, I still feel like both venting and laying my head.
  
  I'm in my mid-30's and I don't have kids. A friend of mine, single mother of two, more or less bitch slapped me today without even knowing it, I think.
  
  We were talking about being single at this age and I said that sometimes I saw it as a blessing tho it can be lonely. (Some of my friends are getting remarried for the 2nd and 3rd time at this point in their lives.)
  She said she agreed, but that she never could imagine being single without kids. I sat there, quiet for a moment, and then said that some of us just don't have a choise. After all, not everybody finds the person they want to have children with and then there are those you simply CAN'T have children, no matter how hard they try.
  
  Her answer? That she in that case would foster children. Or help out families that have problems. Or at least spend more time with her godchildren. She could just not imagine her life without children in it.
  
  Well, we come from very different families. Her parents are both still alive and together, mine were divorced before my 5th birthday and my dad passed away when I was a teen. For the longest of times I thought I didn't want to have children, it's just recently after big changes in my own life that I have come to think I have something to offer a child.
  
  And that's my point, if I ever had children I'd have them because of what I could offer them, not because of what they would offer me. Am I crazy to think like this? I'm very well aware of the fact that once you have children you go thru fire and stone for them and could not imagine your life without them, but to me it seemed like she thought my life had no purpuse since I don't have kids. And she made me feel like crap.
  
  I know my life has alot of purpose, this isn't about that, she just made me feel really bad. Thanks for letting me vent.

I know many people, including me, that were conceived or adopted to fill some need of the parent. That makes a miserable sort of life, I'll tell you. I absolutely agree with you, people should not have or care for children because of what the children can offer them or for filling a void. Having or not having children is a choice (yes, I know, some people can't have children due to fertility issues, but there are other ways) Parenting, whether through birth, adoption or fostering is a choice that one should make based on what they feel they could offer a child. If a person does it to fill a void, they could end up heart broken when their child doesn't turn out the way they wanted or they could end up being a poor parent because maybe that child doesn't fill that void. Please don't feel bad. It is no ones business if you have children or not, it is completely your business. I have worked with children as a teacher, and I do enjoy them, but I went from disliking babies in my teens and twenties, to ambivalence and peer pressure in my thirties, to acceptance of childlessness in my forties. I never needed to have a child to feel complete as a woman, and neither should you. I'd spend less time with that friend, if it were me. I agree that the worst reason to have children is to fill up a void inside of yourself, or fulfill an agenda. As a kid in the 1950's, remembering those HIDEOUS maternity outfits, I'm frankly surprised that any of my generation wanted to get pregnant! The best children have fur and four legs.   • How absolutely dare she! I don't blame you for feeling like you do. Funny enough we had this conversation yesterday. A good friend of mine is getting married in August for the first time at 44. She is happy, in love, they've lived together for a few years now and have decided to get married. She doesn't want kids and was grilled in no uncertain terms last night by another friend who is very unhappily married but with three kids that rule her life. The moral of the story is that we are all different and what suits one certainly doesn't suit everyone. I'm kind of single at the moment, by choice, and the number of people who are urging me to find someone to share my life with is ridiculous. I shouldn't have to explain myself and my choices or settle for just anyone rather than be alone. People can't see that you can be happy and fulfilled and not live with a man, I guess some people feel the same about not having kids. Its mad if you ask me.       • When I was young, I and my friends bemoaned our fertility rather than our lack of it! Honestly, I have never had a friend who spent anguish and $$ on fertility treatments! Not even one! Also, I have always enjoyed kids but never have had that unmistakable "baby hunger" that I saw in my friends. My favorite response to the "Why haven't you..." question, if I think it's rudely asked by a stranger, is "I can't mate in captivity".   A friend who used to work with me has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. She is to have surgery on Tuesday.   First of all, thank you very much for your kindness in posting all the well-wishes to my post below. DS is better, finally have an electrician coming over this afternoon, and roof repairs are on the list as well. So, just when I think it's safe to go back in the water, I find out from my mom this morning that my dad is in the hospital. He has two blockages in his heart, one 90% and the other 70%. There will be no bypass operation or even stents or angioplasty, because the doctors feel at his age (87) it would be just too dangerous. To top it all off, he can't go home yet, even though his docs say he can, because they have over a foot of snow on the ground and it is still snowing, and there's no way my mom (she's in her 80's, too) can even get out of the driveway to get to the hospital. Maybe tomorrow, she hopes. Oh, man. They're in PA and I'm here in TN, and I hate that I can't be there to help. I've called my brother, who lives in MD, but he's snowed in as well. So if you'd spare some healing vibes for my darling dad (throw in some anti-grumpy ones as well, for my mom's sake), and some prayers for strength and calm (and no more snow) for my wonderful mom, I sure would appreciate it. I'm not even going to ask "what's next?", cause I don't want to know. Thank you again, dearest hosers. You are the best!

  I saw that on a t-shirt once. If I had one, I'd burn it. Last night we lost electrical power in all the wall sockets in the living room and in one in the kitchen. Everything else works just fine. I checked the circuit breakers but nothing there seems amiss. The power stayed off for 14 hours. I called an electrician but have had no response as of yet. Sigh. This morning my DS misses the bus. Another sigh. On my rush out the door to take him to school and still make it to work on time, I accidentally knocked a prescription bottle with a 90-day supply of one of my daily meds into the sink, which, of course, was filled with soapy water. I had just picked up that scrip yesterday. Big sigh. Then I get a call from DS's school, saying he's running a fever and I have to go get him. Bigger sigh. Then I get home and discover the roof is leaking. Aaaarrrghghgh. All this right after the burglary, too. Sometimes life sucks. Anyone else want to run away?

  • I hope things improve for you. We were having lights flickering in one part of the house - every time the furnace blower was on it was worse and the microwave was sounding like it was on variable power. Finally had the electrician who upgraded our wiring out - he spent almost 2 hours playing around and couldn't find a thing. He suggested it might be outside the house and we should call the electric company. They came out and discovered some screws inside the meter were old and weren't connecting correctly. He repaired the meter and all is fine. No charge because it was their equipment. OK! One downside - when we came back inside the house the freezer (circa 1974 and FULL) was sounding like a spaceship. It seemed to work fine but we were afraid to leave town on a couple of trips we have planned. So . . . repaired electric meter - $0, new freezer almost $600.   For those of you going thru a hard time now I would like to share a memory with you. I was 25 years old, my second baby was 6 weeks old and I just received a phone call from my mom that my dad had passed away that night. My world stopped, I was so stunned. I placed the baby in my mother in laws arms and went outside. I don't remember if I was crying but I don't think so. I just stood in the driveway and waited. Soon in the distance I heard the tractor coming home from the fields. It was becoming dark. I heard the cows lowing and the gate open and closed. Then my DH was there and took me in his arms and then the world was moving again. He just held me and then I could go on. It's been 25 years since that day. Whenever bad things happen to me now I remember that moment in his arms and it gives me the strength to go on. I pray that each of you find that comfort in your time of need.

  Hi Everyone Thanks so much for the support a couple of months back with Duncan's (who's now 11) chronic open butt cheek wound after a skate injury. Today we finally got a doctor's appointment to take out what looked like a little bit of gravel and it was one of the supposedly dissolving stitches which hadn't dissolved whatsoever. We have also have three larger pieces of something...whether cloth or gravel.. come out over the past month. Both doctor and nurses seem confident that the skin will now form quickly and heal so with any luck that's what will happen. Maybe a couple more grow good skins vibes wouldn't go astray.   The econnomy has finally caught up with us and DH business is going down. The problem isn't financially, we'll manage. But right now it seems that everything gets dumped on us in the last week and there is no chance to catch un with the workload that seems to have appeared out of thin air. The DH is completly stressed out. And I try to help where ever I can, but there are things I simply can't do, and those start to pile high.
  I haven't been able to do a "fun" thing for more than half an hour straight for weeks, I haven't even read in what seems like ages.

  Well today is the day. A little while ago I posted on the polls/survery board about an opportunity presented to me involving going back to school for my PhD with a few alterations to the typical PhD schedule. Well i decided to go for it. I am scared out of my mind but today I have a meeting with a School Prof that will hopefully help me out along with two of my other colleagues to help facilitate this process into school. This is the first among many meetings/interviews I will have. I hate these things but I don't want to say 20 years from now that I was too scared to try. I still have a little "homework" to do but if one, a couple, a few, just some of ya'll could say a prayer for me that I don't screw up because I am nervous and scared that I can find faith and confidence within myself, I would GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!!

  Hi everyone. I'd like to request some prayers for a friend as well as for myself.
  
  Although my friend Heather and I have drifted apart over the last few years, I found out today that her mother passed away this week after a long battle with breast cancer. A few days after her mother passed, Heather gave birth to a baby girl. I can't imagine the mix of grief and joy she must be going through right now, so any prayers and good thoughts you could send her way would be appriciated.
  
  I'd also like to request a few prayers for myself. I've had a "twicthing condition" for lack of a better way to describe it for the last 10 years, and in the last week it's gotten really out of control to the point where I can't even drive. I ended up in the Emergency Room on Tuesday because I couldn't stand the pain of the constant muscle spasms, and they gave me a muscle relaxant and some painkillers, which helped until I realized I'm allergic to the painkillers. Back to Motrin for me. At any rate, I have an appointment with my primary care doctor on Monday and an appointment with a neurologist on Wednesday. No one could see me any sooner. I just hope that the neurologist can figure out what's causing the twitches (or causing the twitches to get worse) and I can get some relief.

  • I had something similar happen to me except that it was in my eyelid. When I went to my eye doctor about it, she recommended drinking tonic water--apparently quinnine--an ingredient in tonic water--helps with the twitches. (Mind you, my case was minor.) I drank diet tonic water and sure enough, after a day or so, it cleared up. You could try that and see what happens before you go to the doctor. Good luck!   There is a teacher in our district whose husband had a liver transplant when he was 18. A few months ago, he was told that he had 1-2 years before he would need a new transplant, due to his immune disease. He was taken to the ER a few days ago, and was then flown by medevac to a larger city hospital, and is now on life support. He's 33 years old, with a young wife, 3 year old son, and 8 month old son. Please pray for this family - this is a young man with a large extended family, a lot of whom work for our district, and his loss would be sorely felt, not least by his little guys. And please pray for the donor, if one occurs; when you need a transplant, your miracle is someone else's tragedy.

  • I hope and pray for your friend but a liver transplant is easily done with a living donor, the organ regenerates itself. The donor is weakened for several months, the recipient longer but eventually, and assuming no complications, they are both 'normal'. You didn't say exactly what the condition is so maybe a live donor isn't an option but I know it can happen. My sister is possibly going to need this and I am 'it'.   • My oldest brother had a liver transplant back in 1998 - on Mother's Day, to be exact - and although it was touch and go, and has been difficult since then, he's done amazingly well - participated in the Transplant Games in Brisbane this summer and won a silver medal in Golf.   • I always think the whole transplant issue is such a difficult one as I really hope you friend gets a new liver in time but then that means, as you rightly say, tragedy for someone else. What I pray is that if there is someone who dies suddenly or tragically the family will have it in their heart to donate the organ. When my friends 19 year old daughter was hit by a truck last year she gave a kidney each to two people and a liver to another man.   • UPDATE: Brian passed away on Friday night. I wasn't able to go to the funeral home, but I guess it was packed until after 10 pm on Mon. night. I can't imagine what his wife and family are going through. A little girl from our area, who had been befriended by Troy Polomolu of the Pittsburgh Steelers, also died Friday night of Ewing's Sarcoma. At the end of Brian's obituary, his family wrote that "Although they never met in this life, we feel that Brian's final mission was to accompany a special young lady on the walk to the gates of Heaven late Friday night. Heather and Brian shared a connection through Brian's sister and Heather's aunt and we know that he would not have allowed a child to take that walk alone or afraid."   Salina, my friend Jenn's little girl was born with spina bifida. She's now about 8 years old. She is mostly wheelchair bound, but you would never realize it, she is so full of life and doesn't let it affect her. The rest of the story is below. They're a great family with two boys also (one older and one younger) and have been dealing with these issues for a long time as you can see. Keep her in your thoughts as they have a long road ahead.   She (Salina) had surgery on Jan. 12 to lengthen her growing rods - a procedure that's become quite routine for us. She's been her doctor's poster child for this pioneering approach to scoliosis in combination with spina bifida. Her incision was doing well after the Jan. 12 surgery until late last week. The bottom portion of the incision began draining an unhealthy fluid. Her doctor talked to me each day over the weekend & we came to see him yesterday, Monday. She was admitted and scheduled for surgery today, Tuesday. The wound is very deep - clear to her spine & the rods. He cleaned the wound very well today, but the news really couldn't be much worse. He's fairly certain this is the work of MRSA & it will be a long-haul to get it better. She has a wound vac in her back & it will be changed every 72 hours (I think). He'll need to change it surgically each time. She'll have another surgery on Friday (I think) to see if there is any positive progress with the wound & change the vac sponge. We'll be inpatients at least through early next week & probably longer. She may eventually be allowed to come home, but we'll return each time the vac needs to be surgically changed. If things don't get better, there is a chance that we'll lose the whole project - the rods will all have to come out. It's challenging to get an infection away from hardware. I am fortunate that my girl does not feel sick, but that doesn't change the fact that I have a very sick little girl. The infectious disease group will join our team so we can hopefully get control of this. She will be on IV antibiotics for a minimum of 4 weeks & possibly 8 weeks. From there, she'll spend months on oral antibiotics. She will come home with a PICC line when the time comes for her to leave the hospital. If we can get a handle on the infection, it will always be a risk with each future surgery since the infection can hang-out on the metal growing rods even after prolonged antibiotic treatment.
  
  That's the story as I know & understand it now. It will likely change every time a doctor walks through the door. We have blood & wound cultures growing now & those results will help to dictate the direction we go.
  
  Salina ate a great late lunch & is in great spirits. She's a great girl who is tougher than nails. We appreciate everyone's well-wishes & love. More news as I know it.

  Just a note to let those of you who remembered Mary our friend with wee Hamish that she passed away last night. I posted at the end of last year when she had a stroke, she regained consciousness but couldn't communicate and was being fed through a tube. I hated the thought of her just existing like that but I didn't have the courage to go and see her and now I feel so sad that I didn't say goodbye. I kept meaning to go and putting it off because Al (my ex) said it was really upsetting and she wouldn't know me and I took the easy option, wanting to remember her how she was. Now its too late.
  
  Every day I would pass her house and say a little prayer to God asking him to take her, begging him to, and last night he listened. She was a very Christian lady and believed firmly that she would be reunited with her late husband one day and now she is.
  
  I've got so many lovely memories of Mary and she was so proud when she got so many cards from the Kirk Angels when she had her back operation 10 years ago. Thanks so much to all those who've sent cards over the years and prayed for her. She's at peace now.

  I just learned that a very dear friend of longstanding has a brain tumor. Her biopsy surgery is tomorrow. Her friends were alarmed at her speech problems during a phone call last week (stammering, inability to organize her thoughts, and forgetting words for things) and whisked her off the the hospital for a CAT scan and MRI. I am planning a move soon back to the Bay Area where I lived most of my adult life before moving 400 mi. south to care for senior parents. Prayers are also requested for all I need to do for things to go smoothly: Sell our house and its contents; place my dad in a care facility up north; re-home my elderly cat. I will stay some of the time with Janette, helping her out. She has a large support group of friends and two wonderful adult sons, so I won't be in my current situation, best described as isolated away from my support system, with only a minimal one close by. However, my small group of new friends here in LA are treasures. I'm lucky.) I spoke with her last night, and heard firsthand her great difficulty organizing her thoughts.     • First get yourself into counseling, then encourage your DD to come then approach your H to come. By doing this, your DD will see she has you on her side and counseling may be a way to help her understand why your H is acting this way. My DH's dad was much like that when he was a teenager, it got worse and worse until DH was able to stand up to him, not in a mean way, but by saying to him, "I am a human being and I will not allow you to speak to me that way". Because he had spoken with me (then his girlfriend) and some of the youth counselors at church, he was able to remain calm and say what he needed to say. He explained to his dad that he had given him 17 years of respect as a son and that his dad needed to show him respect as well.   I start classes on the 19th, and I still don't know where I'll be living next week. I'm in a state of disaster from that uncertainty (I have a bad track record when it comes to sharing living quarters) and from what my mother says is emotional exhaustion from being more or less married for the past two weeks. Girlfriend went home on Monday and to say I've been dragging is the understatement of the century. I don't like to blame others for my own inability to get out of bed and remember to eat, but I suspect my mother might be right. Now I find myself wondering if it's possible to love someone as a friend with benefits but not want to be in a relationship. Or more to the point, I'm wondering how a girl is likely to react to such a proposal. I'd like some way of knowing that I wasn't going to make her cry, or get myself smacked.
  
  I spent entirely too much time trying to talk her out of making me things, bringing gifts, cooking and cleaning up after me and generally treating me like some kind of lord and master. All of it was awkward since I do take pride in being fairly self-sufficient and I didn't want to seem like I was taking advantage of her presence (not to mention the idea of my being her lord and master is distasteful at best and goes against pretty much everything I've ever known and/or thought about women). It was the cleaning up after part that threw me the most, since it made me feel guilty about being lazy and not doing it before she could, while at the same time letting me sink into the very bad habit of not bothering to pick things up myself. Now that she's left I have to deal with the debris from the fabric bomb that got set off in the living room (two sewers in a close proximity for any period of time generally leads to a chaos of thread bits and fabric scraps), and Mum reminded me this morning that I need to start packing yesterday.
  
  Not too keen on the prospect of roommates either. Thus far all but one of my attempts in that foray have ended in disaster, and the one that didn't is now a life-long friend/keeper who knows me entirely too well and goes back and forth between encouraging me in my idiocy and shaking his head in disgust, then sabotaging my evil plans with a dose of well-placed logic. I don't think I can handle the prospect of two of him, but the alternative seems to be someone who I will A) fear, B) frighten, C) end up in a horribly complicated relationship with that will end only with my withdrawing from school due to being suicidal, or D)hate with an unholy passion.
  
  Since I'm over 21, there's a chance that I'll get placed in the on-campus apartment complex, in which I won't have to deal with roommates at all, but I might be turned down for it since I'm a transfer student. I'm supposed to get the big email today.
  
  Nothing particularly ground-shaking, and all of it is more than a bit selfish...
  
  One of the cows died yesterday. Brunhilde, our star Ayrshire, was nine years old, and leaves behind Rosamund (2 1/2), Odin (around 1) and Freya (6 months). My da's saving her horns as a memento.

If you have to share, I hope you don't get some creepy person who scares you or some dweeb who is scared of you, but rather a friend who can live their own life and let you live yours. As for the first question, that's a tough one, but she sounds way to needy to be in your life right now, so you might want to take it back several steps - Just my opinion of course, feel free to ignore it.
