Subject: Any other crazy people out there?
So far, Page2/Steph and I have signed up. I'm pretty sure I've lost my mind, since I'll be working and writing a final project for class on top of trying to write 1600 words per day to win Nano.
Old Dogs was my first foray into strictly mainstream fiction, no weirdness, no magic, no supernatural creatures, nothing. My first Nano was with werewolves as the protagonists. But urban fantasy is getting quite a workout these days so I don't know if I want to follow that path again.
I've got an idea about a world in which identical twins, with secret languages, psychic links and ther rest are the norm, and singles are unusual. Aside from that I have no idea what direction to take with it. I don't know if I would have them treated as interesting, much as we do identical twins, or if they would be considered imperfect, since they are isolated unto themselves.
Any ideas? Suggestions? Direct orders? I'm open to anything.

Well, I talked to twins tonight and asked if the world was like them how would they treat them. Their answer: they would feel sad for them. Like they were challenged in some way because they don't have their other half.
You could do many angles on this, it depends on what your up for. The rarity of a "single" birth could be seen as "very special" and they could be treated as such. Or, perhaps they are treated as "challenged" and maybe locked up in a ward of other singles that perhaps the government took. Maybe the challenged ones are really "SPECIAL" and between all the singles that are locked up they have their own unique language and link; maybe the government uses them for experiments.
Now is the world only "twins" or are triplets acceptable and are they treated any differently. Perhaps, this "house" is filled with singles and the spare triplet.
You could tell it from the POV of the rare single until he gets to the "house".
Just ideas I'm bouncing off. I like this idea. Unless there is two... you're packed up and shipped to the "house".
Hope I was helpful.

Could go with something like that... --

This is a major idea that has plagued me since I started to think about it. I have very good friends that are identical and Connie lost her sister last year in a house fire. She definitely feels like half of her is gone.

Hadn't considered the possibility of other multiples, though I was going with all twinning to be identical. Maybe frat twins are one step down, singles another. The idea of them to gather or be gathered in one spot is good, I think maybe I was headed that way, but not sure where it's going from there. Food for thought
Thanks Steph! I think the wheels are starting to grind...

It's your world, if all the births shoot identical twins - then that's what happens BUT what if, there are the rarities like fraternal or triplets and GASP a single. What's happening to their race of IT's? If the world only know IT's then I think they/someone would be questioning the uniqueness of these oddities/rarities. Would the parents that had them consider them freaks? Would they want them - hide them - let the government have them. Would they protect them and for how long? Perhaps your MC can be hidden away by his/her parents because they don't want their child taken away. Maybe this is a governtmental control thing. The child grows up and is found out and sent away to the "house". Tested on. If its a girl maybe even impreganated. If so, what happens? Does she have a single, twins? What does this single person think of this world....the home...
You can run wild with this and I can't wait to see where you take it. Eagerly awaiting. Now go start your outline, CA's, chapter outlines, get prepared girl. We are so going to win the NaNo's. :-)

Thanks!!! Lots of ideas to run with. I'll be thinking about this in the weeks to come. Who know what's going to happen. Now, to copy this and the other ideas and paste them into a document for further perusal...

Not doing NaNo this year>>> -- Fi, 10:10:21 10/04/10 Mon
I've decided not to do NaNo this year. I already have too many half-done novels - I need to actually finish one! Maybe next year, when I need to kick-start a new idea.
I will cheer on from the sidelines though :)

Random thoughts about twinning>>>> -- Fi, 10:15:56 10/04/10 Mon
In our world, some species have twins or multiple births are the norm, so it's only a bit of a stretch to have a world where humans are one of those species.
Also, in our world, a lot more twins are conceived than are born i.e. one twin dies in utero. Maybe in your world, a singleton is seen as someone with a "lost twin", only half a person.
How does the incidence of twinning and telepathy affect romantic relationships? If a singleton falls for a twin, does that become complicated because the singleton doesn't understand the twin bond and resents the twins' closeness?
If one twin is gay, what are the chances that the other twin is also gay (I think it's about 50% for identical twins in our world)?
How common are conjoined twins in your world? How are they viewed?
What about friendship? If the twin bond is so close, does that mean that close platonic friendships outside the twin bond are rare? Are singletons more likely to seek friendships outside the family, and are these non-twin friendships seen as second rate?

I'm thinking this is going to be a major idea in my story. I'm thinking of calling it "A Single Self". It struck me a long time ago as a good name for a story like this.

I can where it could be an issue. I am an only child, so I don't even know what it's like to have a sibling, let alone a twin.
>

Good point. I wonder if this will be seen as more acceptable in this world, with being a single the bigger 'handicap'. Letting the thoughts stew...
>

Something I hadn't considered, but thanks for reminding me! Conjoined twins would be a strong possibility with such a prevalence of identical twins.

In addition, I see pairs of twins intermarrying (not in an open marriage, though I can see that being possible) so wouldn't that decrease the genetic diversity? IT's are genetically identical, as far as I know, so if a majority of marriages are among sets of twins, that might force the singletons to help diversify the gene pool... wow, this is wandering into eugenics territory... maybe I'll give a push in another direction... I don't want to get too Brave New World here.
Some fantastic ideas Fi! Thank you very much!

Throwing in my two pence (which is almost four whole cents! LOL!) >>>>> --
Page, 16:34:53 10/08/10 Fri
I couldn't get this story premise out of my head last night, so there I was stretched out in bed, staring up at the ceiling and thinking about twins. One of the comments above dealt with the genetics of identical twins, so maybe a child of a single birth, rare as one would be, would be prized above all others since this child does not share his/her genetic code with anyone else. Just a thought. I love the way this storyline sounds, though!

Oh, and no NaNo for me. When I'm on a roll I probably write 50,000 words in less than a month, but if I thought I had to I'd freeze up like a deer in headlights! --

I hadn't thought about that aspect of it. Now I wish I knew a bit more about genetics. I'll have to do a lot more research in my copius free time...(that was sarcasm, by the way...;-)
