Subject: HOMEWORK

I’m thinking three options, but the first one is super easy. It’s just a way to ensure that everyone here has no excuse not to post one. The second and third are a bit harder.

One. This is just for fun. Pick your favourite homework assignment that has ever been assigned, and post what you wrote. A brief note on why it appeals so much to you would be a great addition as well. And trust me, it doesn’t get any easier than this. If you meant to write something, but getting it done has provided its own challenges and opportunities, now is the time to do it.

Two. Let’s do something with POV. Pick a scene out of any you’ve written with interaction between two or more characters. Then switch it around, and re-write the scene from another perspective. Don’t forget to add in the details for setting and mood etc. etc. We are looking out of completely new set of eyes, and the more contrasts the better. Post both scenes so we can see the differences. This is like a two for one, so double the word count is acceptable. *G*

The third is a word. Passion. Follow where it leads and then post it for us to read and enjoy.

Please remember homeworks are not critted unless specifically requested, each option should be no more than 2000 words, and they should be in their own post. They never expire. And they can be a great deal of fun if there’s participation. So go ahead. Get writing!

Okay, we’re at a cross-road, and I’d like for all of us to be going in the same direction. Personally, I feel like I’m stepping on toes when I do this, but yet, I miss knowing that if I come to this board on such and such a day, there will be something here to challenge me. And while I love the relaxed and understanding atmosphere here, I think a few ‘guidelines’ would help structure us as a group of writers with the same goals. So let’s start with the homework.

Homework is as necessary as breathing to this board. First off it is meant to be fun and I’m all for that. Second, it allows us to participate without worry of criticism, which in turn, allows us to experiment with ideas/concepts we might not otherwise explore. It is an precious learning tool. It provides inspiration. It allows us to share. I could continue but we all know the benefits.

Now, I’ve thought for awhile that having multiple people posting a homework would create an environment that would encourage more active participation. So let’s try it. Let’s create a rotating schedule of homework posters. Based on a bi-weekly assignment, the dates for the next four would be Feb 21st , Mar 7th, March 21st, and April 4th. Yeah, I know. Those dates fall on Monday. But if we’re starting something new, might as well go all out, right? If anyone is interest in taking a turn, email me at myxtress at hotmail dot com with the subject of homework. Pick a specific date that works or I’ll simply add names in the order I receive them. I’ll reply to the email with the date and I’ll post a reminder of who is up next on the homework post so two weeks reminder/notice is always given. And I think that’s it.

Oh. While I’m at it. The list I have could use some updating so anyone who wants to send me some updated info or be added can contact me at the above address.

Okay. That’s it

Hugs

Esther

Actually, if your brain is a sieve like mine, this ain't easy either! ;-)I've posted my school story on the main board and am now groping for something to post for this.

Stay tuned.

[> [> So, I know this was a homework anyway. -- Debi, 22:07:10 02/19/11 Sat

I think this was a "Line, please" and this was "Trust me." I think. Anyway. I just like the lines supplied and getting an idea from imagining one of my charatcers saying it and under what circumstances. So, here it is.

Excerpt from "New Tricks: copyright Debi Matlack 2011. Posted for sharing; does not constitute publication.

“I knew this was a bad idea.”

Valerie lagged behind Daniel as they climbed the trail through the trees. A hike up to the summit of Wayah Bald seemed like a good idea when he’d suggested it. Now, however, faced with the reality of the narrow path, rocky footing and steep slopes, Valerie was rapidly losing her enthusiasm. She almost ran into Daniel as he paused, waiting for her.

“You were excited when I suggested it earlier.” Of course he wasn’t out of breath. Or the slightest bit nervous about the elevation. Valerie glanced downslope and gulped.

“I was, then, before I was faced with certain death.”

“Come on, silly goose. The path is perfectly safe. I won’t let you fall.” He moved aside to let an older woman and a little girl pass them.

“Y’all up here for the first time?” The lady paused, smiling at them.

“Yes ma’am. Though I think I’m a little more enthusiastic.”

“Don’t worry, sweetie.” The old woman shifted her walking stick so she could pat Valerie’s arm. “It’s an easy climb and the view is magnificent.” She glanced over at her companion. “Me and my granddaughter come here at least once a month. Have been since she was a wee thing. Enjoy!” The two continued their steady ascent. Daniel met Valerie’s eyes and raised his brows.

“Don’t say a word, adrenaline freak. I’m climbing.” Daniel’s chuckle drifted down as they resumed their hike.

“’Let’s go to North Carolina, you’ll love it up there. You’ve never been to the mountains before. You said you’d like to see the Smokys.’” Valerie’s bad-tempered mocking of past conversations only made the snort from above louder.

“You should save your breath. You’re not used to the altitude.”

“I’m a flatlander, anything more than sixty feet above sea level is a high altitude.” Her sentence ended in a squeak as a stone rolled under her shoe and she slipped. Before she could slide more than a foot, Daniel’s hand caught her wrist, stopping her fall and hauling her back to her feet. Eyes wide, she clung to him like a leech.

“You all right?”

“On the verge of a heart attack, nothing major.”

He brushed her off and looked up the trail. The other two had already vanished. “We can go back if you want, but we’re almost there.” He ducked his head down to look into her eyes. “What do you say?”

“Never give up, never surrender.” Valerie wanted nothing more than to retreat back down the path to the waiting car. But then she’d have to endure the terrifying ride back down to the highway on the steep gravel road, not to mention the silent teasing from Daniel. Looking with dubious confidence at the rest of the trail, she nodded. “Lead on, kemosabe.”

She slipped once more as they reached the top of the huge rock. She held Daniel’s hand like a lifeline; as far as she was concerned, it was.

The top was paved with flagstones and had a waist-high wall. Fall was just touching the vegetation with a festive palette and the slopes of the surrounding mountains were covered with trees of every color imaginable.

A long intake of breath and ‘wow’ was the best she could manage. It was glorious. Daniel squeezed her hand.

“You can let go now. Trust me.”

So she did.

And I still love Valerie's wry wit *G* Thanks for sharing. I really do like these blasts from the past, you know?

And maybe one day, I'll find my favorite homework assignment and post it. For me, there were quite a few that I remember distinctly, and my problem was deciding which one to post, and once I did, it seems to be MIA somewhere in the WIP. It's a good thing these assignments don't expire...*G*

Hugs
