We've probably all read tons of advice from other writers on how to hone our craft and how to write "good" books. But here's some perspective from a reader:
This advice made me baulk, though: "The components of a novel that readers care about most are, in order: story, characters, theme, atmosphere/setting."
I thought, NO, I'm greedy, I care about all these things at once! Give me a pageturning plot AND characters I care about AND themes that make me think AND a setting I feel I could walk about in. Then I'll not only finish your book, I'll remember it, recommend it to my friends, and put your next book on pre-order. But maybe DG has raised my standards too high ;)
