Steroids not for sports

The use of steroids in sports is just becoming apparent to mainstream America by media coverage on the subject. Steroids have been used by professional athletes since the effects on the human body first came to light. Steroids increase game intensity but are illegal and can have harmful side effects. I have noticed an increase in popularity to take steroids to get stronger, quicker, or to gain body mass. People have strong opinions or do not even care about the subject. I have noticed since coming to college that all types of athletes use steroids. So is it ethical to use steroids in sports?
Using steroids gives you benefits that anyone can see. The user gains size, strength, and even speed very rapidly. You also get an aggressive edge because of hormones. In turn it can give sports that hard hitting action, which everyone loves. Steroid users can get prepared for competitions in a much shorter time. The choice to use steroids is all up to the user and could be pressured to use them.
One thought is that it is ethical to use steroids because it is just another enhancement drug. Athletes must strive to be the best and are pressured to ensure that they can preform at their max. So they resole too alternative means of strength training. Steroids just increase testosterone levels and result in increased strength. Creatine, a legal enhancement drug, does the same thing but is more natural. It is widely used and is somewhat doctor recommended.
Athletic associations take a different stance and have harsh outcomes for users of steroids. Take Ben Johnson for example. He tested positive for steroids and was stripped of his Olympic medal. Athletic associations say that steroid use is unnatural and they have too many long term effects. This is true in a sense because there are many side effects but if used correctly they enhance your abilities. It is the choice of the athlete if he or she wants to deal with the effects and should not be up to their officials. Associations would then argue that is unfair to athletes that opt not to take the drug but there is alternative means. They also get the honor of playing the sport in it’s “natural” sense.
There also seems to be a trend to be the bigger and better. Sports are changing in this sense, too. If you look at the first players in sports, they are significantly smaller than today’s athletes. As competition gets stronger, so must you to compete with others. Steroids give chances to people that may have a smaller size but have awesome skills in the game. It gives them that edge in the game that everyone is looking for.
The media and the government both detest the use of steroids in sports by brining the unlawful use of steroids to the public’s eyes. It is the media that expects athletes to excel and in today’s world there are a countless number of physical enhancement drugs. Athletes will do anything to give them that edge in the game. Their fans want that edge and the hard-hitting action but some do care how the athletes get their abilities and if they are natural players if the game.
