In the light of recent events around the world, one can only wonder how the United State’s involvement in foreign affairs is shaping the global community. The reconstruction of Afghanistan is no doubt one of the most widely recognized efforts of foreign involvement that the United States is currently taking on. Being a tax paying American, I want to know where my money is going and how well our government is working to make those dollars count. How is economic and military aid from the United States effecting the reconstruction of Afghanistan and has the quality of life for the Afghan people improved within the last year as a result of United States military and economic aid?
The current white house administration lists specific accomplishments made in Afghanistan due directly to United States military involvement and financing. They claim that there have been drastic increases in the progress of woman. Educational opportunities for all Afghan people have increased. The Administration reports increases in health among the population and the success of agriculture. International cooperation and the support for democracy are on the rise. The U.S. government has provided more than $3.7 billion since September 2001 to aid Afghanistan. The Bush Administration also sites specific councils that have been assembled with U.S. help to aid in the development of democracy, increase in educational opportunities and opportunities for woman in business and government.
Critics of the Bush Administration are not convinced that the quality of life has become better for the Afghan people. The Taliban are sill in force according to many sources and Afghanistan is still a safe haven for members of Al Quada. It is also argued that Hamid Karezai, the U.S. back president of Afghanistan, has little authority outside of Kabul and many feel they were safer from crime when the Taliban where in power. Though laws restricting woman’s rights have been eliminated, there is little stopping woman from being persecuted for exercising their new rights. Heroin production is at an all time high and attacks on foreign aid workers have increased so dramatically that many organizations have stopped sending people into the countryside.
Understanding the steps taken by the United States to aid Afghanistan and the effects these steps have had on the Afghan people will help determine how well the Bush Administration’s policy on Afghanistan is working. It is important for Americans to examine these foreign policies to understand how they are affecting the citizens of foreign nations as well as the global community.
