The article “Web sites offer ‘blueprint’ for anorexia” was written by Judith Graham from the Chicago Tribune in August 2001.
Hundreds of web sites are giving young girls tips on being or becoming anorexic. “Pro-anorexia” movements are becoming the trend. The “pro-anorexia” idea is that “a disorder that causes girls to starve themselves – should be embraced and even promoted”. Doctors are appalled by the fact that anorexia is being embraced, when it is such a deadly disease.
Girls who are using these websites say that it is a place “for people who realize that ana is a lifestyle and a decision, not an ‘illness” to be fixed”. On these pro-anorexia websites they teacher girls how to hide food from their parents, loosing weight, and controlling their binging and using diet pills or laxatives to stay thin.
Anorexia is one of hardest ‘illnesses’ to cure because unlike alcoholism, admitting they have a problem, they look at the ‘illnesses’ as how much self-control they have, or how far they have gotten in the weight loss process.
These websites do have a warning before entering them, the warnings “seem to be evidence these Web authors know the sites can be dangerous”.
