In the article entitled “Registering Doubts,” the author, whose name is not credited, examines the possibility of elections being held on time in Afghanistan. The author claims that certain cultural factors make elections difficult. Even so, Afghan president Hamid Karzai has announced that elections will be held in June. The author explains that despite lack in budget that the UN has managed to register a number of voters, including woman. “Every woman said she was registering because her husband had told her to,” claims the author, questioning how well the Afghan people understand the significance of elections. However, an election early in the summer would make it easier to access polling places than it would have been had elections kept to the original schedule of late September, when snow fall can cut of certain regions of the country. Though the author seems to remain hopefully, he claims that a lack in UN finances may prevent voter registration in a number of regions.
