Subject: White Sheep Patch

I recently purchased a convex photograph/painting of a
Sgt. Jim Gipson which is a Military Heirloom Portrait done in Chicago in 1943. I'm not even sure what branch of the military he was in but there is a patch on his right shoulder and it appears to be a side view of a white sheep's head with it's mouth open. Anyone recognize this and could you tell me what part he might have played in the War? Thanks, Dave Decou
