I found out that Joseph Heller's WWII B-25 bomber squadron was the 488th Bombardment Squadron of the 340th Bombardment Group (M). The Group consisted of the 486th, 487th, 488th, and 489th Squadrons, was in the 57th Bomb Wing of the 12th Air Force, and flew from Alesani, Corsica.
Joseph Heller described his 488th squadron patch thusly; "...a brazen depiction against a dark background of a slim, well-busted naked female wielding a thunderbolt while her windblown hair streams behind her and she sits suggestively straddling a long, projecting bomb that free-falls forward and downward."
BTW, I'd be interested in purchasing one of these (leather) patches, in good condition.
