Subject: Morally, I think all bets are off when someone hurts your child
In reply to: Amy 's message, "A question borne of Blondie's post (m)" on 10:03:03 03/28/03 Fri

Legally is another matter, though, and what's moral for an individual is immoral for the state. In other words, I could forgive a parent killing their child's murderer. I can't forgive the death penalty, because the whole purpose of civilizatoin is to help us overcome our baser tendencies in the interest of harmony and higher reasoning.

So I wouldn't presume to criticize a parent taking vengeance, but I would insist that they be prosecuted and serve jail time. If I were a vengeful parent, I think I'd take a jail sentence as the price of my revenge.
