I don't know if you know that Frank Herbert's son Brian Herbert, along with novelist Kevin J. Anderson have been penning the prequels to the Dune Chronicles based on Frank's notes.

After they complete the trilogy chronicling the Butlerian Jihad, they are going to write the novel that is Dune 7. They found Frank's notes detailing what was to happen in the 7th book, the series finale, and decided to translate those notes into a novel.

So the mystery of the Thinking Machines, the Golden Path, the face dancers, the Scattering, the worms, should all be answered.
Of course sometimes answers have a way of breeding more questions.
so we have to wait 3 years or so to find out, but it is coming.
