It's been pointed out that using Water of Life to obtain Other Memory was only done by Fremen Sayyadinas. No one else knew about the Water of Life until after Paul Muad'Dib. Which means that the BGs had to use something else to create their RevMos. Remember, Spice is very expensive. I find it very likely that they used another drug before the Spice.
But wait...does Mohiam specify the Water of Life when she talks to Paul in the beginning of Dune? Hmmm. That makes no sense. WoL is supposed to come from a drowned worm and no one can do that except the Fremen. That would be a big boo-boo. It also makes no sense that it would take over 6000 years after the Guild began using Spice to navigate for the BGs to even figure out about OM. Sigh. Where did this timeline come from anyway? From Frank?
