After reading your post about media and crowd control, I thought you had just read "Manufacturing Consent" by Chomsky. I had to read this slim volume in college. Noam is a Linguist but his work is widely read in the social sciences. It is a little on the left-leaning side for good or ill but I think Chomsky could have written your post about media. I liked the book for its spot-on observations of the prepackaged entertainment spoon fed to us.
Yep, I agree about the Matrix reference. So many books and movies have ripped Frank off. Star Wars and the Matrix. This could be another thread: name all books and movies that use Dune as a reference. Sand Poeple=Freman.
I think there will still be some surprises in Dune 7 & 8 though. Leto lectures Anteac and her BG partner about the definition of machine might be inadequate versus societies that treat humans as machine parts. I hope Brian and KA can give us deeper characters than TBOC.
On a juvenile note, I'd like to see Teg put the smack down on Darth Sidious.
