Subject: WEll then what happens when Frank Herbert Contradicts himself
In reply to: theButterfly 's message, "to IDAHO: logic fallacy" on 14:02:30 05/16/03 Fri

So then what happens when Frank Herbert has small inconsistencies in his own writing??? Do the books that contain these then become less than canon... I think not.

And bringing back the examples of Star Wars, when George Lucas's prequels contradict the originals...does that make them less canon?

Speaking of logical fallacies...I did NOT make one. because it wasn't a false dichotomy. It was a simple if p then q.
Something is either a true statement or it isn't. Something is either canon or it isn't.
That was in response to the fact that you said that they are not canon...period. You did not mention levels of canon or a pick and choose scenario or any other mitigating circumstances. You simply said that they were not. Why do you maintain that they are simply NOT canon when you yourself have said, to the contrary, that they provide "histoy" of the Imperium.
Under your criteria of canon...the prequels are not canon, because there are slight inconsistencies.
I disagree, I believe that all the inconsistencies which appear to be inconsistencies are not deviations, they are simply changes in what we thought to be true.
Using the ubiquitous example of the Baron...we THOUGHT that the Baron had been fat because that's the way he wanted to be. In the prequels we learn that this is not so. In fact, he wanted everyone to believe that, though it was not true. It builds on what we believed to be true in the original books.

I maintain that the prequels are canon. If you want to argue about the level of canon or some other mitigating circumstance, fine. But you can't say that something provides valueable insight into what the history was like and then say that the history is false and not pertinent to the story. Especially when I have proven differently with the prequels affecting the futre book DUne 7.

You were the one who set the standard of something either being true- canon, or false- canon. Even in your last post.
