In Heretics of Dune, Herbert makes it clear that the Empire and the Scattering spans MANY galaxies. I had always thought it would have been confined to one galaxy; this quote changs that:
"..Teg knew his history well by then. Navigators no longer were the only ones who could thread a ship through.. space-in this galaxy one instant, in a faraway galaxy the very next heartbeat."
