Of all the books, Butlerian Jihad is probably the most simplistically written with characters that aren't as compelling as any in the House books or the originals. It didn't thrill me as much as the original Dune novel. But none of even Frank's subsequent books did.

Part of it has to do with the fact that there aren't really political factions scheming against each other in these books or humans with special powers (except for those witches) because they haven't been formed yet. So in terms of what's going on, it's nowhere near as MAchiavellian as the the other books.

I will concur with Ghanima in that Vorian Atreides and his relationship to "Agamemnon" is probably the most interesting relationship followed by the Xavier Harkonnen, Serena Butler, Vorian Atreides love triangle and Norma Cenva's character. Everything is a bit more simplistic I will agree. There is a lot less history to cover in a way because this really is supposed to be the backstory of Dune. It doesn't have an incredibly rich backstory to draw upon becasue it IS the backstory.

So I wouldn't call it a "travesty". I was still entertained and interested to find out all the origins of the groups like the Bene Gesserit.
I will continue to read though and I bet there will be some very cool moments during the Battle of Corrin and so forth which will start the feuding between House Atreides and Harkonnen as well as establishing the dominance of the Imperium and House Corrino.
