paul knew he was harkonnen by "walking the future" in the desert after the attack by the harkonnens before his ordeal with the water of life. in the fremen r-m ceremony,using the water of life, the new r-m shares o-m with the dying r-m. they travel inward and see the past lives together. they also sense that place that "terrifies" them. paul goes there during his water of life experience. i believe that this is the 'smoking gun'. although frank doesn't write that paul used o-m , he ,in my humble opinion, certainly experienced it during his water of life trip.
