Well after relistening to my audio tapes of the House books, it seems that the Bene Gesserit plan to produce the Kwisatz Haderach was only a plan within another plan, or rather, there were other forces at work to produce Paul.
In fact, there was a plan to produce Paul instead of the Bene Gesserit intended Kwisatz Haderach. Hence Paul wasn't necessarily a mistake or a simply a product of defiance and love by Jessica. There was another master plan involved.
My guess is that this "Master Plan" will be discussed in the later Legends of Dune novels being published now.
Any thoughts?
And if Paul wasn't a mistake perhaps Leto II was also an intended result of the scheme?
