Leto's "death memories" come from a different source. Leto has so many ancestral memories that there comes a point where he remembers from the point of view of one ancestor(say, a great grandfather) while also remembering that same ancestor from the point of view of the next generation of that ancestor(say, the grandfather....) This allows leto to remember botht the birth of the grandfather and the death of the great-grandfather. This continues in hundreds of thousands of generations for Leto...so that he remembers entire lives of his ancestors from a BROAD point of view, encompassing eventually ancestral memory of 'mankind.' Pretty fascinating stuff, really.
