This is one of the most annoying points of the miniseries, but, here we go.

The Cast Out you're referring to is the leader, but for not lets call him the "fat guy" (not trying to make fun of him, but I was rather pissed off when he popped out of nowehere and killed Paul). You'd only understand it after watching the miniseries a few times. In the beginning, he doesn't want to kill Paul, but is merely watching him to make sure he's doing his job. But when Gurney takes Paul out, and Paul does his speech, it was not in accordance to the Cast Out's plans. That's why the man killed him, because Paul wasn't following his plans.

In the books it is so much easier to understand. They dramatized the deaths way too much in the miniseries.
