Well one thing to keep in mind is that if Leto hadn't enacted the Golden Path, humanity would have been extinct, but not necessarily by the machines. It could have been Muad'ib's Jihad I think or something else. But it was definitely machines who would be the threat at the END of the GOlden Path.
Either way, humanity would have been extinct somehow due to their lack of being able to escape prescience or having not having the GOd Emperor rule.
