...and then after Martyr's (first show with my buddy Tom and second show with my wife Erica) I then intended to go solo to Indy. It was a Thursday.
So there I was in my Chicago Bungalow, working at home (yaaaay) slaving over a hot computer, looking forward to Indy. Work just wouldn't quit that day. 4pm came and went, then 5pm, then 6pm. Through the afternoon I started to feel that scratchy throat feeling that indicates an oncoming cold. My car was way overdue for an oil change. I had no cash. I was supposed to do a lot of work that night too. I hadn't seen my wife (except for the Martyr's show the night before) in days, it seemed.
...and I was sure to miss the first set, it being so late.
Finally, there were so many reasons not to go that I just had to flout them and do it. I took my sniffly scratchy throat on the road at 6:15pm. Had to stop for gas. Had to get through the infamous Illinois-Indiana 80/94/65 traffic fiasco.
Go go go go
Hauled ass all the way down to Indy. got lost on the way to the venue. When I finally got to the Vogue, I was sure the second set must be starting.
I walked into Big River and got a smile right away when I saw John was playing the red PRS. I had just seen him play the Carvin at 4 shows, and although I like it, I like the PRS better. All Hail the PRS!!!
Once again DSO uncannily provides a perfect show. The first set of this show was HUGE. I missed...
Promised, Sugaree, B. T. Wind, FOTD, El Paso, Bird Song
...but I still got almost a whole first set worth
Big River, Tennessee Jed, Mexicali, China Cat> I Know You Rider, Playin, Casey Jones
I Love those huge early 70s shows! DSO played great. Tom Ryan was great. The China>Rider jam was delicious. Kevin was THUMPIN. The Indy crowd was cool and fun. After Playin looked like the set closer, the Casey Jones was over the top. Yaaaaay!!
...but I was still feeling like crap. That cold was really setting in all through the drive and into the show. Yuk. During the set break I thought seriously about making my way back home. After all, I was supposed to be at work the next morning and get a bunch of things done at night too. Staying for the second set would be well worth it if I was just slacking off from work, but I was sick as a dog as well. Yuk!
So, there I stood, by the stage, pondering. I looked up at the stage, thinking "Should I stay? It's been a lot to get here. I should stay. But I feel like crap. What should I do?" -- then the band came out, and I thought "well, here I am - show me something to make me stay."
TRUCKIN
Man that was the coolest truckin I ever did done see. Yummy yummy - my feet were as happy as they could be. Sometimes you just can't stand still and this was one.
Then Loser, Jack Straw, Half Step, and Me & My Uncle
...it was like getting yet another first set!
I love those early 70s shows where tunes show up in all different places. Nice surprises. Yaaaaay!
Then He's Gone - man the PRS really was shining in that tune. We'd had a He's Gone back in Davenport with the Carvin. This was the moment I KNEW that the PRS was my fave!
Then a pounding Other One. I remember way back in the middle 80s reading a thread where people were talking about "where, exactly, does the other one begin?" and the concensus was, WHEN PHIL SAYS SO!! That's how it was here. Kevin laid down the law. I think I still have a bruise where the air from the bass cabinet hit me. ;^)
...well I made it this far, so I deserve a reward for sticking it out with my nasty cold, right? SING ME BACK HOME - not an encore or a filler, but right in the middle of the set where I never would have guessed nor expected it. Hadn't been sung back home since my very first DSO show in San Diego in 2002. ...or maybe GFest3 @ Nelson '02 Man what a cool treat!
Then Sugar Mag and Uncle John and the show announcement with no encore.
...and then, what's the filler as I am about to be all night long coming home?
DONT EASE ME IN
HOW DO THEY KNOW?!?!?!?!?!
Thanks DSO
:) dave
