Subject: RFL Round 3 preview

Leningrad Ubermench v SwanGunners

Two teams in desperate need of a victory, as they occupy 13th and 14th places on the RFL table. The Gunners have been ravaged by injury and suspension thus far, and with Matthew Burton and Stephen Doyle both missing, the rucking stocks continue to be very low. Daniel Chick and Trent Croad are both available for selection, and are capable of boosting the Gunners' meagre goal-scoring tallies of the first two rounds.

The Iron Fist lose Mark Stevens out of its misfiring midfield, and will be looking to Jeff Farmer to boost them in that area. Matthew Primus is capable of dominating this game, and for that reason alone Leningrad deserve to start favourites in what promises to be a low-scoring encounter.

University Wolves v Darkness Eternal

The Wolves have kicked off 2003 in fine fashion, with a couple of crushing victories. The Shadows are also undefeated, but they have done it a bit harder, winning by one and ten points.

The Wolves have almost a full list to choose from, while Darkness Eternal has suffered injuries to Jonathan Brown and Matthew Richardson that threatens to decimate its forward line. It's hard to see the Shadows kicking a winning score against the confident University outfit.

McHale's Navy v Club X

Troubling times at HMAS Cerberus, with the Midshipmen off to an 0-2 start and a struggle to find output from their midfield and tackling departments. Stuart Dew joins Peter Burgoyne, John Barker and Ben Marsh on the sidelines, and with goals drying up for Ben Dixon and Paul Wheatley, there might be forward struggles for the Navy too.

Club X has been carried by star tackler Troy Cook thus far, but also has a strong midfield that has thus far disguised glaring deficiencies in the ruck. The Nudies go into this game as favourite, but must be wary of the Jeff White/Matthew Capuano match-up.

Master Bakers v McGuane's Groins

The Bakers were terrible last week, and lose Wayne Carey to injury to further weaken a struggling forward line-up. Back at Flog Park this week, they need a lift from last year's revelation Lenny Hayes.

The Groins have been the early season revelation of the competition, with their two victories making them one of only four unbeaten sides. The underrated forward line keeps scoring as well as any other attack, and they have a good chance to go 3-0 after this weekend.

Checkside Ninjas v Darkness Slayers

The Ninjas got a victory last week, but could pay a hefty price if James Hird cannot regain fitness in time to take his spot. Daniel Bradshaw and Shaun Burgoyne could prove a difficult duo to counter this week.

The Sledge Masters struggled last week after a promising opening-round loss to arch rivals Darkness Eternal. They are further hit with the loss of star forward Alastair Lynch from this week's line-up, and will be desperate for a lift from the underperforming midfielders.

VVS Laxatives v Party Animals

The Laxatives have started season 2003 in pretty good form, but face the toughest test of all against the Groovers at Squirts Stadium. Only Brett Burton and Kingsley Hunter are missing from the Laxatives' list, and they should be competitive at home.

The Groovers once again are setting the pace in the RFL, averaging 165 points per game and firming as flag favourites. They will be hit by the loss of Warren Tredrea this week, but buoyed by the return of Peter Everitt from suspension. The Animals will start as firm favourites.

Fake Madrid v Pill Collectors

Fake Madrid copped a belting from the Party Animals last week, but were hurt by injuries to Corey McKernan and Josh Francou that hindered their flexibility. Misfiring forward Troy Wilson has been dropped, while Francou will miss the remainder of the season.

The reigning champs bounced back to something like their best with a comfortable win last week. There's plenty of room for improvement for the Bloodied Barber Poles - only Steven King could be said to be in form at present. Despite playing away, the Collectors should win.
