Seriously, I'd grab a picnic hamper and take along an entire meal for my family. If anyone asked, I'd comment that we just didn't want to strain the hostess' resources, lol! I'd take paper goods, everything! Make a scene out of it rather than being nice and eating earlier.

You are family. What does it matter how many of you there are? It would be one thing if you were hauling along extra kids, but as long as it's just your family, they shouldn't gripe!

I'm glad you avoided the scene.

Don't even plan on having them over next weekend...you'll have a few days old baby then and don't need to be entertaining, lol!
