I had an interesting incident happen at work today. A couple of years ago I decided that I was done being quiet when my toes are stepped on. Tell me what you think of this e-mail....

-----------------
(Teacher A's name),

I'm not sure why you felt it was appropriate to lecture me in front of both your class and then my class today. If you ever have an issue with me, feel free to either ask to speak to me alone or wait until later to address it.

There was a lot of background information about this story that you didn't have.

First, (Child A) was in my room when I realized the tests had been misplaced. We had a class discussion about this, trying to remember who had been sent to deliver the tests. I told the kids that we needed to find that person so we could send him/her to (Teacher B)'s room to show her where the tests had been left. At that time, my concern level about this was very low. I assumed that the child who delivered the tests would speak up, go get them, and the problem would be solved.

None of the children in my room at that time- F hour- said they remembered who had delivered the tests. At that point I contacted the office to ask them to check with all 5 kindergarten teachers to make sure they hadn't been delivered to the wrong room. When none of them had the tests, I got an A+ student and asked him to go room to room on the bottom floor to check. He went to every room, including the preschool rooms, and nobody had the tests. (Child A) was present for all of this.

When the A+ student returned to say that none of the teachers downstairs had the tests, I let (Administrator's name) know what was going on, and he said he'd do an all-call. After the all call he told me that the tests still hadn't turned up, and that the decision had been made that if I couldn't find them by dismissal, the students would have to stay after and do the tests again.

So, while this wasn't a crisis for you, it was a crisis for me and for the children who were going to have to retest. (Child A) could have spoken up at any time during F hour. It wasn't that he was intimidated by my tone when I came into your room. Offering him a false excuse didn't do anyone involved any good. It wasn't until you mentioned that he brought the tests to you that he admitted that he had been involved at all.

I believe it would have been more appropriate to have simply sent him to (Teacher B's) room to retrieve the tests rather than bringing him to my room so you could lecture me, in front of him and my class, about your perceptions about my level of concern.

I swear, I was ready to deck her! It was bad enough that she spoke to me rudely in front of her class...they were loud and out of control when I went in her room, so she didn't even hear me when I asked if I could talk to them...or at least she didn't act like it.

But, then to come to my room to continue her lecture in front of all my kids! I controlled myself...just told her "thank you for the advice" and walked away. UGH!

This is the woman who, the first week Liam was at the school when he was in second grade, came up to me and screeched, "WHAT is WRONG with that child???"

UGH.
