The most interesting and little discussed aspect of the Holmes personality is his affiliation to Moriarty.

Moriarty is Holmes obverse, dark side. He is Edward Hyde to Holmes Dr. Jekyll. So much so, that there are compelling reasons to believe that Holmes and Moriarty are one and the same person.

There were no witnesses at the Reichenbach Falls. Holmes then disappears for a long time to reappear, messiah like, and reborn without his famous drug habit. Was he actually receiving psychiatric treatment at one of the many popular Swiss sanitoria?

Holmes is praiseworthy of Moriarty, admiring his evil genius and yet at no time does he reveal to the Metropolitan Police his suspicions. Does Holmes lead a literal double life? Often when they were cohabiting, Watson would comment upon the prolonged absences of Holmes. When Watson married and moved away, the real deterioration of Holmes began - he started to disintegrate and the Moriarty persona came to the fore.

Only when Holmes in rational mood re-called Watson to his side did the evil of Moriarty disappear.

Comparing all of the stories of Conan Doyle it is also obvious that the only time Moriarty features prominently is in the same tales where Holmes is depressed or seeking his peace through cocaine.

Was the intention of Doyle to reveal the dual nature of Holmes?

There is a Hollywood movie crying out to be made; Sherlock Holmes - Was he really Moriarty?
