駐守國際太空站「小島號」的十一位成員，有七位染病了！病徵皆是：發熱、咳嗽、胸口疼痛、呼吸困難。
按照道理，太空站內的環境絕對是無菌無毒的，何來病症？「小島號」站長華劍冬百思不得其解。他自己雖沒染病，但仍苦惱非常，皆因地面中心一直沒有作出指示；自他把病者的病歷數據傳給地面後，總部至今未回應，已足足一星期了！
這一星期間，染病成員每日增加。這天，其中一位更陷入昏迷，情況危殆，華劍冬實在不能再等，索性發出SOS訊號，緊急與總部聯繫！
通訊熒幕上，卻出現了一位極不尋常的人物：聯合國秘書長！他沉聲道：「很不幸地，已證實七位太空人染的是SARS，即是二十年前在全球肆虐，殺死近十分一人類的超級疫症！……我們不得已要下這個決定：你們全員須留在『小島號』進行隔離，未獲批准不得返回地面；三天後會有穿梭機送來補給物資及特效藥……」華劍冬的心直往下沉。
因為他熟知那段歷史，根本從來沒有發明過甚麼SARS的特效藥。三天後，他雖未被感染，但一樣劫數難逃；如他所料，飛來的不是穿梭機，而是一枚導彈。
