所謂「垃圾電郵」，可以分為兩大類。
第一類是商業性的。發信給你的，是一些公司或機構，很可能來自外國。或問：他們怎會得悉你的電郵地址？太容易了，因為你曾在網上購物或填過問卷或登記過做某些網站的會員，你的資料就自然已被人交換、傳了開去。
這些「垃圾電郵」目的乃找客人。當中雖有正當字號、正經生意，卻有大量「偏門」，如成人網站、離岸賭博、網上買偉哥等。更有不少，含有詐騙成分，曾令釵h人中招。反正你見它說得太美好，好到難以置信的，就必屬陷阱，比方說：恭喜你已被抽中五千美元的獎金、不必上學也可得到大學學位、可幫男士增長三吋……信我，看到類似的電郵標題，毋須看內文了，馬上刪掉便是。
第二類「垃圾電郵」卻來自你的朋友。通常是他自電郵收到一些美女的艷照，或者她自電郵收到一段感人的文字，就不理三七廿一，轉寄（Forward）與所有朋友分享，於是你成了其中一位收件者；你讀後，又很興奮 / 感動，於是又轉寄給所有人……如此類推數十重後，終於來到我的電腦。
對不起，我一收到，一樣會當做垃圾，看也不看就將之刪掉。（二之一）
