據 CNN 網站消息，世界最大的個人電腦裝造商 Dell 及 HP，剛宣布支持一種新的 DVD 技術，名為 Blu-ray DVD，姑且暫譯做「藍光 DVD」。
藍光 DVD 與現時的 DVD 最大不同處，乃使用了一種藍色的雷射技術。藍色雷射比現時一般採用的紅色雷射有更短的波長，即可讀取光碟上更微細的資料，換言之，DVD 的容量可被大大提高。預計，一隻藍光 DVD 可收錄達四小時的 HDTV（高解像度電視）節目。
現時除了 Dell 及 HP 之外，已有十家大公司表明支持 Blu-ray DVD，包括了 Sony、飛利浦、日立 LG 等。可是，日本的東芝及 NEC 等大廠，卻又開發了另一種類似的藍色雷射碟制式，與 Blu-ray DVD 打對台；該制式已得到「國際 DVD 論壇」的支持，論壇成員包括了二百多家電子廠商及媒體。
到底下一代的 DVD，會是兩種藍碟中的哪一種？似乎決定性的一票，在於荷里活電影公司的取向。情況，有點似當年錄影帶的 Betamax 對 VHS 大戰；兩個只能活一個……
咦？不是還有一種制式，中國開發的 EVD 嗎？對唔住喎，人地外國報道提都冇提過喎！看來，大家都係唔好買 EVD 住，你話我崇洋都係咁話了！
