Subject: Sudden Acquired Deafness

Hello,
I just found this site and am looking for advice. I have an 8 1/2 year old pug. About 3 1/2 weeks ago we noticed head shaking and an odor coming from his ears. We took him to the vet who placed him on antibiotic ear drops. The odor went away with treatment and we thought all was well. He then developed a cough and was placed on oral ampicillin and the steroid prednisone. While on this treatment we noticed he was not hearing and returned to the vet who added a stronger antibiotic and a decongestant. After 3 days we returned for cleaning of his ears under sedation. One eardrum was still a little swollen but the vet felt the remainder of his medication would take care of it and he thought he would be able to hear since the ears were well cleaned out.
Well, he still cannot hear and the vet now says he may never hear! I am sad because I feel that it HAS to be related to the ear infection but I don't know if there is anything more that can be done to try to save his hearing. Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone dealt with acquired deafness?
Thanks so much,
Pam
