Subject: advice on signs to teach

Hi folks! My fiance and I may be adopting this deaf boston terrier. The owner is a breeder apparently and sells the puppies and seems to think that noone will buy her/him since it's deaf, and is willing to give the pup up for free. We found this out when my fiance was walking our dog (who had to be put down to sleep due to aggression problems recently :(), and saw a woman with a boston terrier. He mentioned how i love pugs and boston terriers and she told us about the breeder she knows that wants to give up one. So we contacted her and are hoping to hear from her. I usually don't want to get dogs from breeders since i don't want to support breeders but since she wants "to get rid of it", i want it heh.

The funny thing is that i happen to be deaf. So i definitely don't need sign language lessons heh. I'm really hopeful and have been researching how to train deaf dogs and taking care of boston terriers. What I am wondering at this point is what signs should i start teaching at first? Should i start with one and move on once the pup comphrends it, or start with a few?

I assume that i'd first start with "attention", and rewarding the pup whenever eye contact is made, that way it'd actually watch me when i sign! Then move on to actual commands. The first few ones that comes to mind would be good, sit, lay down, outside, stop, food. We're thinking of using the method of giving the pup something else to do instead of saying no, and using stop whenever he/she refuses to quit whatever it're doing after we tell them what she/he should do instead.

Any advice? What were the first few signs you taught your dog? Any information is most welcome! Hope to be a visitor to this board more often!
