He is younger and at a program of less stature than Roy. With Smith's shadow looming like a Bo or Paterno, you need somebody who can handle that sort of pressure. The only exception would be for a UNC career guy (think Mo, Carr, Miles, Cameron, etc) to get the job. But apparently it has to be the *right* UNC guy and for whatever reason, Doherty fell out of favor with Smith. Maybe Phil Ford would be this sort of guy.
