Details from the MSU game. (long)
Posted on March 18, 2016 at 07:31:38 PM by Josh

Best Groupon ever. Got session 1 weeks ago before the bracket announcement. Went with an IU alum, Hal, who got a grad degree from Dayton.

The first game (Dayton/Syracuse) sucked. We got to the lower bowl, and found a group of seats in the MSU section, where a bunch of seat moving non-MSU nomads all found seats. Then late arriving MSU fans started claiming some of those seats. Who goes to just the second game of a double header- especially knowing that your team would play the winner of the first game? People who drink, said Hal.

Warm ups, MTSU was hitting everything. A lot of jump shots hitting nothing but net.

My love of MTSU started with the introduction of players, and Giddy Potts is introduced. Giddy Potts, my man. I'd take Giddy Smith. But add Potts to Giddy, and god damn that's good.

We contemplated moving to the MTSU section- but one of the nomads said, don't do it- there is an usher there swooping in and kicking anybody out who cannot produce a ticket. So we stayed with the MSU fans- best decision ever.

You saw the game. MTSU played smart beautiful basketball. Up 17-5 was fun, but I made the comment "that poor fan base thinks they are actually going to win." Hal laughed.

Early on, MTSU pulled out the 1-3-1, and got a turn over off it. Then a time out, and Izzo is furiously working with his players. You can tell he's explaining how he wants them to beat this 1-3-1. I say jokingly to Hal, MTSU is now going to pull the genius move of showing the 2-3 zone. And god damn after the break, they came out in the 2-3 zone.

Good fun. But Hal said it would be tied by the 10 minute mark. Hal was wrong.

I loved the inbounds screen, dunk play. Like people were discussing last night. Completely illegal. One of the MTSU screeners pushed the defender out of the spot. It wasn't called. Leaper goes airborne to that spot, catches the ball at the rim. Boom. 2 more for MTSU.

We concern trolled much of the game. For example, I would yell, "that's not a foul", when Costello picked one up, and then I'd give Hal a low five, and we'd chuckle.

The MSU woman next to me, in her 50's or so- was getting real tight. She looked like me before going to PT to get my back adjusted. I was feeling bad for her- sort of. I yelled a few more statements of outrage about the game- especially decrying how none of the players were showing up to play.

Started falling further in love with MTSU. Dreds with the sweet jump shot.
Costello came to play. He had like 6 post play baby hooks- and looked like he could do it all game. In the second half, MTSU adjusted. No idea why Forbes wasn't on the board until the second half. He had great looks a lot of the time. MTSU giving those open looks was putting a knot in my stomach.

Wait, who just checked into the game? Quavius Copeland? The Syracuse guys near me couldn't stop saying Quavious. Clearly, they were falling in love, too.

At one point, I turned to Hal and said, this one is going to hurt, when MSU starts pulling away.

Right after that Valentine fouled the 3 pt shooter, who was smiling more than me. And he hit the free throw. Four point play.

"I've seen this script before" said Hal. "MSU plays tight, then explodes in the second half and wins by 20."

We assumed MSU would come out tough after the half. The first play after the break looked like it had promise, but MTSU stayed with their men and it looked broken by the end.

MSU was clawing back. You could feel it. The MSU crowd was coming on. They were looking forward for that moment to erupt with a tie or a lead. Almost happened when Forbes got yet another open look- but it long rebounded, right to Valentine. He missed the second three try in 10 seconds. MTSU rebound. That play could have been the changer.

The Syracuse boys are having too much fun- and we're all acting happy as MTSU keeps the lead. Heard the Lets Go Blue chant from the MTSU fans earlier. In the second half I started the lets go blue yelling. More cheers for MTSU baskets, and gasps when fouls would be called but the ball not going in.

The MSU fan next to me -- the tight woman-- she went away. Her husband kept watching the game. She could not. Five minutes to go, she left and did not return. her husband stayed.

fine by me, gave me more room for the jumping up and down and fist pumping. Lets go Blue. Lets Go Blue.

Hal and I were the kid meme in the back of the car. This is really happening.

I cheered so hard I got woozy at the 7 point lead.

Got a picture of the score board.

Best Groupon ever.
