Subject: When it rains...well, it rains

Okay, I realize the Big weather story is Hurricane Ike but on Saturday a 24 hour record for rainfall occurred right here in Chicago. (That's a 130 years of recordkeeping.)Offically 6. something but some places had up to 10 inches. Places near where we live.

I spent the entire day from 8 am to 9pm picking up rugs and emptying bookcases and carrying stuff upstairs and did you know I can put a refrigerator up on bricks but not a clothers dryer. Of course, the refrigerator was almost empty. Come to think of it so was the dryer. Hmmm...

Okay, NO flooded basement but I was worried and really amazed that we stayed dry. My neighbors' yard ( the corn growers) was flooded and they put up a dozen bags of sand (decorative yard sand not the sandbags you see in floods) to keep the rain from pouring down their basement steps and into their basement. Later, they got a small pump to get the water off the patio etc and out toward the front lawn.

The odd thing is that Ike's remnants arrived here on Sunday so Friday into Saturday was just regular rain and no weatherperson predicted anything unusual.
