Chicago has 24 beaches and yesterday 23 of them had a swimming ban. Pollution due to the heat you ask? Nope, it was FOG on Lake Michigan. The lifeguards couldn't see the swimmers in the water so the hot sand was open but the cool water was forbidden.

One man was arrested for refusing to get out of the water. I'm not sure how that saw him to arrest him but there you have it.

I've never heard of the Fog closing beaches during a heat wave. Apparently, the cool lake waters come into contact with the hot air mass and create water vapor. The NE wind blew the fog onshore. It was 10 degress cooler at the lake yesterday than elsewhere. Just another odd Chicago weather fact.
