Subject: Sam story

the back story - I'm walking Sam home after a notably poor effort at his basketball clinic. I say 'notably' because the quality of pretty much everything you see at a Sunday afternoon basketball clinic for 20 or so six-year-olds can be described as poor. Sam's small group of kids lost all the drills, showed no desire to listen to their coach or to take it seriously at all.

the conversation:
Dad: Sam, I couldn't help but notice that your group kind of stunk today. You guys weren't only losing, you weren't even coming close. What's up with that?

Sam: We had some really terrible players in our group.

Dad: I noticed that but it seemed like part of the problem was that you guys didn't even care or try all that hard.

Sam: Well yeah because we knew we couldn't win.

Dad: Well, you pretty much guaranteed you'd lose by not even trying. When the other team has better players, then the only way to beat them is to outhustle them, you know.

Sam: That couldn't help today.

Dad: Well, then, what about pride in doing your best and working to get better? You guys weren't even listening to your coach. You were just horsing around.

Sam: Why can't I go to basketball AND have fun?

Dad: When I was your age, I always listened to my coach and tried as hard as I could to win. And you know what? It was ALWAYS fun.

Sam: Well, you just think you're perfect, don't you?

Dad: .....
